Abstract

Biomechanical assessment plays a crucial role in identifying and minimising the physical strain experienced by workers in Micro, Small and Medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those involved in manual material, are important for the economy. In briquette-producing SMEs in Medan, for examples, workers often face repetitive movements and high physical demands, which can cause problems for the musculoskeletal system, complaints and decreased productivity. This study aims to design an ergonomic hydraulic trolley table based on a biomechanical assessment in order to reduce physical workload and injury risk among workers. The research methods included direct observation and the distribution of the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, identifying body parts experiencing discomfort; posture assessment using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method; and anthropometric measurements. Ergoniza software is used for biomechanical simulation. The NBM results indicated that the most frequent complaints were in the waist, shoulders and arms. The REBA assessment revealed high-risk scores, indicating an urgent need for ergonomic intervention. The biomechanical simulation using Ergoniza  demonstrated a significant reduction in physical workload following intervention. The trolley table was designed based on the 50^(th) percentile of workers' anthropometric data, and was adjusted to standing elbow height and equipped with a hydraulic lift and wheel system to eliminate the need for manual lifting. This design is expected to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, enhance comfort and improve productivity among SMEs Rumah Briket Medan workers.
